A Day Of Events Celebrating Reading!

Last Thursday was World Book Day, an annual worldwide celebration of writers, books and reading. The whole school got involved and excitement ran high as students were treated to a brilliant range of events.

St Mary Magdalene Academy Islington World Book Day 2019 all staffStaff wore literary costumes (with a prize for the Guardian group who correctly guessed the most characters) and read their favourite short stories aloud to students. Author Sita Brahmachari gave a talk on her writing journey. In–house author and English teacher Ms Ashley led a storycraft workshop, and Ms Barnes led a debate 'Banned Books vs Freedom of Speech'. Every student was given a free book token, and had the chance to take part in quizzes and competitons. We even had a Lord of the Rings themed lunch!

Whether it's boy wizards or gangsta grannies, handmaids or hobbits that get our students interested, we love to see our students excited about books!
