GCSE Results 2023

This year’s results are another set of fantastic outcomes for the pupils of St Mary Magdalene Academy.

Over 40% of all grades were 7 and above, an incredible achievement that will allow pupils to study Key Stage 5 courses with demanding entrance criteria.

65% have secured the challenging 5+ grade in English and Maths: this is a 5% improvement on our 2019 results, which was the last time that the pupils sat exams with the higher pre-pandemic grade boundaries. Almost 80% of pupils have achieved the benchmark 4+ (the old C grade) in both subjects.

Across the other curriculum areas, there are some excellent results for subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, German and Mandarin had 100% of their grades at 4-9, and Music and Religious Studies had over 90% of grades at the same level.

This stellar set of GCSE results was achieved despite this cohort suffering significant disruption to learning time during the pandemic; having little chance for formal examination practice; and in the context of a return to the full course content and more robust grade boundaries of the pre-pandemic era.

There were so many individual successes that we have selected just a few to highlight: Jawad, Felix, Sean, Madoc, Eleanor, Cristina, Rionach, Freya and Jessica all got 6 or more Grade 9s across their subjects; Liamara, Otto, Rosie L, Henry, Milla and Calypso received the coveted “9 at 9”; and Edoardo and Natalia achieved an incredible 11 Grade 9s apiece.

Head of Secondary, John Reardon, said

The Class of 2023 have done tremendously well and we are extremely proud of their achievements. Despite all of the disruption and challenges created by the pandemic, the pupils have worked extremely hard and shown great resilience and determination to achieve excellent results. These are key qualities that form part of being an SMMA pupil and ones that I know will take them far in life. We are very excited to see them move onto the next stage of their individual journey.

Vicky Linsley, Academy Headteacher, said I am so proud of the pupils. They have been rewarded for all their hard work, resilience and determination. The results are also a tribute to the parents and carers and to the dedicated staff at the Academy who have nurtured and supported the pupils. Congratulations to the class of 2023!
