Open-air Gallery brightens Academy building site

Vibrant sunflowers from Van Gogh, calm pastels from Monet, dramatic forms from Klimt and black and white street art from Basquiet – these are just some of the influences of famous artists behind the Open-air Gallery of paintings that decorates the hoarding around the St Mary Magdalene Academy construction site. All the fabulous artwork has been created by children from St Mary Magdalene Primary School. With a little help from mural artist, Nathalie Frost, the children worked in small groups over a two-week period in the summer to produce over 30 pictures.

Nathalie was highly impressed with the children's talents and progress, and said, "Even over this short timeframe, I could see the children grow in confidence, as well as developing their artistic skills. The project wasn't only about teaching colour and pattern, but enabling them to believe that absolutely everybody can achieve."

Head teacher, John Stewart, said, "The blank canvas created by the site surrounds provided a great opportunity for the pupils to develop their skills and get involved with their new school at an early stage. The children loved working on the project, which went a lot further than creative ability. They also learned a lot about working together, encouraging each other, and enhancing their communication and social skills."

Everyone is welcome to see the pictures which will be on display along Bride Street, N7, until the school building is completed in October 2007.
