Joy Hinson
What type of governor are you? I was appointed by the sponsor, London Diocesan Board of Schools.
Why are you a governor of St Mary Magdalene Academy? I am a local resident and worshipping member of St Mary Magdalene Church. I have been the chair of governors of St Mary Magdalene Primary School for a number of years, and I led the Academy plans through our governing body. I therefore feel a strong responsibility for the success of the Academy and will work as a governor to ensure that it fulfils the vision we have for this exciting new school.
Which subject at school did you love best and why? I didn’t much like school (although I have managed to have a career in academia).
What’s your favourite: chocolate or ice cream? I don’t like either chocolate or ice cream: they give me toothache and make me feel sick. I am a keen Arsenal fan; I have held a season ticket there for over 20 years. I love food and cooking, but don’t like to buy food that has been flown halfway around the world. I work at Barts and The London, QMUL, where I have responsibility for postgraduate teaching, and student welfare. I cycle to work, and avoid using a car or flying wherever possible. When I grow up I want to be an eco-warrior.
What are your hopes for St Mary Magdalene Academy? That it will be a huge success both academically and in terms of how it is valued by the local community. I hope that it will shine as an example of all that is best about Christianity.
