  Topping out 2: the sequel
8 May 2008

Thursday 8 May was another significant milestone in the development of the Academy, with the ceremony to "top out" the phase 2 buildings. Mace Plus, the main contractors, were delighted with the progress on the project and look forward to handing over the building in September, as expected.

Mark Castle, Managing Director of Mace Plus, welcomed everybody to what was for him a unique experience: a second topping-out ceremony on the same project. He thanked the main partners in the project for their contribution to the success of the programme, and was particularly pleased to inform the guests that they had also successfully passed the 100,000 man-hours mark without a notifiable accident, a record all at Mace Plus were proud of.

Venerable Stephan Welch, Archdeacon of Middlesex, spoke on behalf of the sponsors in congratulating the team on their progress and identified not just the building of a school but the foundation of a Christian community built on strong values.

Paul Hollingum, Principal of the Academy, showed his genuine excitement at being on the play space on the roof and looked forward with great joy to the prospect of bringing his own hockey class onto the roof for the first time in the not too distant future.

Councillor Ursula Woolley, Lead Member for Education in Islington, was delighted with the way the Academy itself was progressing and the increasing role it was now taking in both the education and wider community of Islington.

Terry Spraggett, Director of Mace Plus, and Rob Hannan of the London Diocesan Board for Schools, cast the last piece of concrete and this was levelled by Paul Hollingum and Councillor Woolley. The occasion was marked with the presentation of a second silver trowel.
