Safety Day workshops
The day was organised around the theme of how to keep safe as young people. The pupils took part in several workshops with local agencies. They were encouraged to demonstrate what they knew about a variety of safety issues, and they learnt new ways of recognising danger and keeping safe.
We were fortunate to have our Academy police liaison officer, Mel West, with us, alongside the Fire Brigade, Childline, the RNLI, the CEA Road Safety Officer, the Ashiana Project, and two excellent workshops run by our very own staff.
In the first aid workshop with Ms Norman and Ms Daley, the pupils played dead and learnt first aid essentials. One pupil commented after the workshop: "If someone needs help, I could help." They also learnt with Mr Jackson and Ms Ross about the increasing problem of cyberbullying. "It gave me good advice," commented one student.
The pupils were encouraged to tell us what they really thought about the day by completing an anonymous questionnaire, which they did so honestly and thoughtfully. Many pupils thought the Police, Fire Brigade and cyberbullying workshops had been the best. One pupil commented on the Police workshop: "It taught me that you should always be careful", and of the Fire Brigade, "It has helped me to be more aware of fire."
Overall, the day was a great success. One pupil commented, "They were all fun!"
