Glowing Ofsted report for St Mary Magdalene Primary School
24 August 2007
St Mary Magdalene Primary School has received a glowing pre-Academy Ofsted report after government inspectors visited the school on 26 June.
John Stewart, head teacher, was singled out for providing exceptionally good strategic and day-to-day leadership, in which he "skilfully develops and supports staff so that they can work very effectively as individuals and as a team".
The inspectors noted that children make rapid progress in Reception and, by Key Stage 2, are above average in both English and Maths. By Year 6, standards are "significantly above average". This outstanding progress and achievement is put down to the high standard of teaching and Christian ethos of the school.
Pupils showed an excellent attitude, and their behaviour was found to be respectful and polite. The children have a strong sense of belonging and speak fondly and proudly of their school. Overall, the report described their personal development and well-being as "outstanding".
Staff at St Mary Magdalene Primary School were also praised for their purposeful and imaginative teaching, carefully structured lessons, good strategies and clear explanations to pupils. The report noted the effort they put in to the range of extra-curricular activities offered, which is particularly appreciated by the children. One pupil is quoted as saying, "our teachers give up their time for us and really care for us".
Looking ahead to the future, the report praised the excellent forward planning, in conjunction with the Academy principal, with staffing in place, the new building progressing well, and well thought out plans for September 2007 when the school opens as the all-age St Mary Magdalene Academy.
It also states that, "the governing bodies of the school and academy link together effectively, providing a clear voice for the community, and supporting and challenging the professional leaders well".
Commenting on the report, John Stewart said, "I am delighted that the school has come out so well in the report. The OfSted inspectors were quite thorough, and recognised the quality and dedication of everyone who works so hard to make St Mary Magdalene such a success. I congratulate the staff and pupils, and intend to carry this badge of excellence forward to the new St Mary Magdalene Academy. I am confident that it, too, will be a total success."
Catherine Jenkins, Chair of Governors, said: "I am delighted that the Report has recognized not only the excellent teaching and learning but also the very positive and warm character of the school. By the time children leave the school, they are knowledgeable, confident and ready to face the next stage of life having had a first-class primary education."
The full report can be seen on the Ofsted website.
