  secondary studentsAdmission to Year 7:
Secondary department

The St Mary Magdalene Academy has an agreed admission number of 180 students in Year 7 and will consider all applications for places. Where 180 applications or fewer for Year 7 are received, the St Mary Magdalene Academy will offer places to all those who have applied.

Where the number of applications for admission is greater than 180, applications for admission will be considered against the criteria set out below. The policy will seek to balance a wish to service the local community including all students irrespective of faith (known as "Open" places), with the particular demand for places at a school with a Christian ethos from practising Christians (known as "Foundation" places).

Order in which applicants will be considered:

1. First priority to St Mary Magdalene Academy Primary students (max. 30).

2. Second and third priorities to Statemented and Looked After Children.

3. For the remaining places, siblings are given priority (secondary siblings only).

4. Of the remaining applications, they are initially all considered in one pile. Of the remaining places on offer (i.e. 180 minus 1, 2 and 3 above), 70% are awarded on the basis of proximity to the school.

5. The other 30% of places are awarded to those qualifying for foundation places – i.e. attending an Islington Church of England primary school with proximity to St Mary Magdalene Academy being the discriminator where there is oversubscription.

All of the above should amount to 180 places.

6. The remaining "unsuccessful" applicants are then ranked on the basis of proximity to the school. Those who qualify as within the foundation category (i.e. are attending a Church of England primary school) are identified.

If not all of the 180 people who have been offered a guaranteed place by the Academy accepts that offer (i.e. they have had an offer from one of their higher preference schools), then a place is offered to the next highest ranked person. However, if it is a foundation place which has become available, that place is then only offered to the next highest ranked foundation applicant.
