Chair of Governors

What type of governor are you? I was appointed by the sponsor, London Diocesan Board of Schools.

Why are you a governor of St Mary Magdalene Academy? Because I'm enthusiastic to explore and develop what a Christian education means for young people in London.

Which subject at school did you love best – and why? English. I had an inspirational teacher and I loved the analysis of motive, plot and style that came with reading really good writing. I was very moved by Shakespeare, Wuthering Heights (Bronte) and the subject introduced me to poetry (at school, John Donne) which I still love.

What's your favourite book of all time? I have lots. I think my top few are The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

Who was your most memorable / inspiring teacher at school? My English teacher – she was quite old fashioned and had extremely high standards, but when she taught, you got the feeling that you were seeing the tip of the iceberg of her knowledge. I enjoyed listening to her as she clearly loved her subject and she treated the students as grownups.

What's your favourite: chocolate or ice cream? Dark chocolate.

What are your hopes for St Mary Magdalene Academy? That it is a sign of the value of life itself – encouraging young people to be all that they can be. That it is a place where its Christian foundation bears fruit in the affirmation that all people are made in the image of God whatever age, ability, ethnicity or gender they are. That it is a place that strives for excellence and also a place that models forgiveness and fresh starts. That it is a school firmly rooted in its locality, serving the community. That it is a community itself, which values the contribution each individual student, parent, teaching and support staff member can make.
