James Kempton
What type of governor are you? I am nominated by Islington Council to represent the local community.
Why are you a governor of St Mary Magdalene Academy? I was born just round the corner and have been elected to represent people round here on the Council since 1994. I have been one of the driving forces behind this fantastic 10th secondary school for Islington.
Which subject at school did you love best and why? History. It's about what people did and why they did it. And studying the past can reveal so much to us about the world around us today.
What's your favourite book of all time? Too many to say. But I always recommend everyone reads One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez.
Who was your most memorable / inspiring teacher at school? Mrs Busby at primary school, because she got me playing the piano.
What's your favourite: chocolate or ice cream? Any chocolate is my favourite. And any type of ice cream, provided there aren't nuts in it.
What are your hopes for St Mary Magdalene Academy? I want it to be the first choice school for people who live in the area, with all the pupils living within walking distance. And I hope pupils will leave having had the best possible education, the widest possible experiences and with a real sense of self confidence and pride in their community.
