Who will be teaching my child?
In the coming months, the Academy will be recruiting highly qualified and experienced teachers with a track record of success in their current schools. We will also make the best use of skilled professional coaches to support the delivery of specialist parts of the curriculum such as dance and sports.
The school will also use a range of para-professional services to support the education of each child from teaching assistants and mentors to specialist technicians and instructors.
Research has shown that when children move to secondary schools, many are intimidated by the size of the school and the numbers of staff and pupils. Some find it difficult to get to know so many new teachers and it can be just as difficult for staff to get to know all the new students.
To avoid this and ensure that learning needs are met, years 7 and 8 will experience "home base" teaching with one teacher covering English, Humanities, RS, PSHE, ICT and Learning to Learn. Students will see this core teacher for at least 10 hours a week and they will also have a "science and technology base" for 6 hours a week.
Alongside this, there will be four hours of Mathematics, two hours of PE, two hours of Spanish and one hour of Performing Arts. In this two year period, children will normally be taught by a maximum of six teachers. This will give teachers and students a much better chance of getting to know and understand each other.
Our buildings have been designed so that the teaching of years 7 and 8 will be on one floor of the Academy, with students only leaving for PE lessons or break and lunch periods. We believe these arrangements will not only enhance learning in the first two years of secondary education but offer children the best possible transition from primary school.
